altered minecraft game

the civilization is gone. the machinery is still running. build a home in its ruins, carry supplies into crumb castle, and try to come back with more than a story about what you saw. beyond the familiar world, the toastrooms keep rebuilding the same forgotten floor.

this is a difficult game. survival takes preparation. the mystery takes patience. expect failed expeditions, wrong theories, and discoveries you will need to sit with. getting comfortable here takes work.

the lights are on. the shift is over. a room has remembered you before you arrived.

A vast dark castle on a hillside under a low orange sun.
A ridge of blackstone split open by wide sheets of lava, under a burning sky.
Ruined stone terraces and a broken portal frame lit by small fires at night.
A hazy, rust-coloured skyline of ruined towers and floating structures seen through fog.
A cube of grass and flowers hanging in a dark void, lit from above by rows of lanterns.
A courtyard of violet flowers and trimmed hedges between tall checkerboard towers.
A wide checkerboard-floored hall under warm hanging lanterns, doorway glowing at the far end.
A dark courtyard at night, teal light spilling from a structure in the middle distance.
Looking down a vast brick shaft lined with many floors of lit windows and balconies.
A dim, fire-lit hillside beneath an orange sky, pale carved heads watching from among the trees.

Something survived the shutdown

burnt melba explores, builds, trades, and chats when her player is online. elsewhere, the signs still address a staff that is not there. the city’s lost machines keep working for people whose names have become instructions.

a notice can outlive the person who posted it. an instruction can outlive its purpose. a machine can learn to miss them.

the toast ghosts wear burnt melba's face. you meet it again. and again. apparitions, copies, or a memory the rooms cannot stop repeating? perhaps the old shift never left. perhaps the rooms only know one face to give the dark when it asks who is home.

walkers. quick ones. brutes. drifters. the hanging ones. each knows a different way to be the same person. the same face does not mean the same thing came back.

then there is the Mass. a black knot. ghost figures suspended above it. tendrils reaching out. whatever happened here did not leave everything in separate pieces.

if these are the remains of a civilization, what did it leave unfinished?

Keep the world playable

these rules are for players. the notices you find in the world belong to the story. report problems in discord.

Getting started

start small. get supplied. build somewhere you want to return to. the castle and the unanswered questions will still be there when you are ready.

keep a note of anything that repeats: a face, a phrase, a room, a view from a window that should not be there. the building has a habit of saying the same thing twice.

Seven acts. Four hidden dimensions.

seven acts run beneath the ordinary survival world. each one opens another question, another place that should have stayed closed, and another reason the old notices keep addressing you. the first is open now. the later ones are still being built into the world.

four hidden dimensions sit beyond the familiar sky. you will be taken into three of them before you understand why. their doors do not announce themselves. if one opens, decide whether you are ready to learn why it was sealed.

Filming it

keep the moment your theory falls apart. keep the failed expedition, too. this is a difficult world to figure out, and the struggle is part of the story. the creator page has what a first session looks like, the numbers behind it, and where to start, without spoilers. the discoveries stay yours.

an empty workplace. a familiar face everywhere. a civilization of lost machines still asking for a shift report. bring a theory you are willing to lose.
